After seeing the space and discussing your preferences, we’ll guide you through the best options. For maximum privacy, board-on-board and traditional wood privacy fence designs are top choices in Wisconsin. These styles minimize gaps, create a strong visual barrier, and can be built to match your preferred height, while still staying aligned with local requirements and neighborhood expectations.
Wood privacy fencing is popular because it balances cost, customization, and curb appeal. Wisconsin homeowners like that it can be adjusted in height, stained to match the home’s exterior, and upgraded with decorative details, while still creating a secure space for kids, pets, and backyard relaxation.
A dog ear wood fence has pickets with the top corners cut at an angle, which is one reason it is a common answer when people search wood fence styles names. It’s a practical choice in Wisconsin because the angled cut helps shed water more effectively than flat topped boards, which can support longevity when paired with proper staining and sealing.
A board-on-board wood fence uses overlapping pickets to reduce visibility through the fence and strengthen the overall look. If someone is researching types of wood fences or types of wood fence designs, board-on-board is often the “premium privacy” option because it creates a fuller, more upscale appearance.
A shadowbox wood fence alternates pickets on both sides of the rails, so it looks finished from either yard. It’s also a smart option in windy areas because airflow can pass through the fence, which helps reduce wind pressure compared to a solid privacy wall.
Yes, horizontal wood fences are one of the most requested modern wood fence designs because they create a clean, contemporary look.
They can also make tight spaces feel wider visually, and they still provide strong privacy when built with the right board spacing and layout.
Cedar is a common top pick because it contains natural tannins that help resist insects, rot, and decay. Madison Fence Company can also guide you through wood selection based on your goals, whether that’s longevity, appearance, or budget.
Yes, routine staining and sealing is one of the best ways to protect your wood fence investment long term. It helps reduce moisture absorption, slows weathering, and keeps the fence looking sharp, especially through Wisconsin’s seasonal swings.

A properly installed vinyl fence is built for long term performance. Madison Fence Company’s vinyl fencing is designed to resist moisture, rot, insects, and discoloration, making it a durable option through Wisconsin’s seasonal changes, from summer sun to winter conditions.
A vinyl privacy fence uses closed panels to block sightlines and create maximum seclusion. A semi-privacy vinyl fence adds patterned spacing, lattice, or small gaps, so you still get privacy, but with more airflow and a more “open” feel in the backyard.
Yes. Vinyl privacy fencing is one of the best options for Wisconsin homeowners who want a backyard that feels secluded and secure. The panels help block visibility, and the vinyl material offers long term durability without the need for repainting or staining.
An scalloped vinyl fence is a decorative style meant to elevate curb appeal. “Scalloped” typically refers to the curved, wave-like look along the top, created by varying picket heights. It’s a great fit for gardens, front yards, and landscape features where style matters more than full privacy.
A picket vinyl fence is ideal for defining property lines while keeping the yard feeling open. It adds charm and structure to front yards and landscaping, but it’s not intended for full privacy like solid panel privacy fences.
Yes. Vinyl is considered a very family friendly fencing option because it doesn’t splinter and can be designed without sharp edges. That makes vinyl fencing a strong choice for Wisconsin homes with children, dogs, and active outdoor spaces.
Absolutely. Madison Fence Company offers a variety of vinyl fence styles, including privacy, semi-privacy, ornamental/scalloped, picket, and ranch style options. Many homeowners also choose styles with faux wood textures for a warmer look without the upkeep.
Vinyl fencing is known for being super low maintenance. In most cases, Wisconsin homeowners can keep it looking great with a simple rinse or a light cleaning using soap and water, no staining, sealing, or repainting required.

An aluminum fence is popular because it’s rust resistant, durable, and low maintenance. It also performs especially well in areas with extra moisture, which makes it a smart option for Wisconsin properties near lakes or yards that stay damp after rain and snowmelt.
Aluminum fencing is known for being highly resistant to rust and corrosion, which is one reason it’s often recommended for Wisconsin climates. With powder-coated finishes, ornamental aluminum fencing can maintain its appearance through seasonal weather shifts with minimal upkeep.
Madison Fence Company offers ornamental aluminum fence options that range from picket styles to pool fencing and security styles. Many homeowners choose classic black, but there are multiple powder-coat color options to better match your home’s exterior and landscaping.
A 3-rail aluminum fence is an upgraded style with an additional rail for extra strength and a slightly taller, more substantial look. It’s a great fit for {city} properties that want a more robust boundary, and it’s commonly used for larger yards, commercial spaces, park-like lots, and open landscapes.
Yes. Metal fencing is designed to improve property security while keeping sightlines open. That means you get a strong barrier that still preserves visibility, which is helpful for front yard aesthetics and for properties where you don’t want a “closed-in” feel.
In general, Aluminum fencing is lightweight, rust resistant, and extremely low maintenance. Steel fencing is chosen when you want maximum strength and a heavier-duty feel, often for higher security applications or commercial properties in Wisconsin.
Ornamental steel fencing works well for both residential and commercial use, especially when strength is a priority. Madison Fence Company frequently installs 3-rail ornamental steel fences with customizable height and picket spacing to fit different security needs and design preferences.
Yes. Metal fencing can often be installed efficiently on uneven landscapes without sacrificing the clean, upscale look. This is especially useful in Madison where many yards have grading, slopes, or landscaping changes.
